The safest way to choose a decorative planter is to measure the nursery pot your plant already lives in—not the widest leaves or the height of the plant.
What to measure
- Top diameter: Measure straight across the nursery pot’s top opening, outside edge to outside edge.
- Height: Measure from the bottom of the pot to the top rim.
- Base diameter: If the pot tapers, measure the bottom as well.
How much room should you allow?
For a cachepot setup, choose an interior opening slightly larger than the nursery pot so you can lift the plant in and out. Exact clearance depends on the planter’s shape and wall thickness, so compare the product’s stated interior measurements whenever they are available.
Do not size by plant height alone
Two plants of the same height can live in very different nursery pots. The nursery-pot diameter is the most useful starting point.
