Planter sizing, simplified
Three rules cover 90% of decisions:
1. Nursery pot + 2 inches. Your planter's inner diameter should be one to two inches wider than the plant's current nursery pot.
2. One-third rule. For floor planters, the vessel should stand roughly one-third the height of plant + planter combined.
3. Scale to the wall, not the plant. In rooms with 9-foot-plus ceilings, size up. A planter that looks bold in the showroom reads small against a tall wall.
By size class
Tabletop (4–8" diameter): herbs, hoya, peperomia, succulents. Shelves, sills, desks.
Medium (9–14"): pothos, calathea, ferns, snake plants. Consoles, stands, floor groupings.
Large (15–22"): monstera, rubber plant, ficus, bird of paradise. Floor placement, corners.
Statement (22"+ or 26"+ tall): olive trees, fiddle-leaf figs, palms. Entries, flanking pairs, architectural anchors.
Measuring
Diameter is measured at the opening, height from base to rim. Every product page lists both plus the base diameter for stand pairing.
